On 24 December 1991, Dr. Mallick F Rahman, a Lecturer in Biotechnology, at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, proposed the idea of starting a society for hydroponics in Singapore to Dr. Tan Gee Paw, the then Principal of Ngee Ann Polytechnic. In a week’s time, the Principal not only approved his proposal but also gave him a seed fund of $ 5000/- to get the society started. An Action Committee was formed with top people from the Primary Production Department (now AVA), the Head of the Botany Department, National University of Singapore, the Commissioner of the Parks and Recreation Department (now NParks) and the Head of Department of Biotechnology (now LSCT) to advise us on drafting the constitution.
